The Royal Family shared a moving quote from the Queen about the Duke of Edinburgh from a speech she gave in 1997 to celebrate her golden wedding anniversary.
She said: “He (Philip) has simply been my strength and my abode over the years, and I and all his family and this and many other countries owe him a greater debt than he would ever ask, or we ever will Experienced. “
The Queen spoke in November 1997 over lunch at the Banqueting House, London, in which she looked back on “a remarkable fifty years”.
Buckingham Palace announced his death just after noon on Friday and issued a statement speaking of the royal family joining forces with people around the world to mourn.
The palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“HRH passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning.”
Details of the Duke’s funeral, due to take place at St. George’s Chapel, are slated to be released this weekend – but the ongoing lockdown in England will affect plans.
It was known that Philip, described by the Queen as her “constant strength and leadership”, wanted a minimum of fuss at his funeral.
Buckingham Palace said: “During the coronavirus pandemic and given current government advice and social distancing guidelines, modified funeral and ceremonial rules for HRH The Duke of Edinburgh are being considered by Her Majesty the Queen. Details will be confirmed in due course. “
