Royal Mint has launched a new collection with Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter.
The original maker of British coins has teamed up with Penguin Random House for the unique collection.
The new partnership means that Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit ™ will appear for the first time on her 5 pound commemorative crown and 1 ounce coins.
Previously, Peter Rabbit and friends had appeared at 50p and was one of the most popular commemorative coin collections from The royal coin.
Now the icon has moved on to a new coin on the reverse of the 5 pound crown, as well as one ounce silver and gold coins.
The larger surface area of the £ 5 crown allowed The royal coin to explore the timeless narrative of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and capture more details.
The Royal Mint’s Ffion Gwillim created the design based on original picture book illustrations and opted for a picture that shows the entire rabbit family together.
Ffion said, “What I really like about this particular illustration is that it has a great narrative element.
“As a designer, I always try to tell a story, like Beatrix Potter did in her unique and wonderful way.
“The Tale of Peter Rabbit was great fun revisiting. It’s such a timeless classic and Peter’s antics never get old.”
The new commemorative coin depicts an enchanting scene of the rabbit family from an early part of the story when Peter’s mother warns him not to do mischief.
The coin captures the warmth and charm of the original illustration and is a key piece for collectors.
How do I buy the collection?
The coin will not be put into general circulation and is available as a gold and silver proof edition as well as an uncirculated edition.
You can buy the coins through that Royal Mint website here and see the full range of commemorative coins.
Thomas Merrington, Creative Director of Penguin Ventures (part of Penguin Random House) said: “Peter Rabbit has had an extraordinary adventure with The Royal Mint over the past five years.
“His appearance on the £ 5 crown marks a new chapter in our partnership and offers an exciting opportunity to showcase Beatrix Potter’s original illustration in a creative new way.”
For fans of the Peter Rabbit commemorative coin, the 2021 coin design will undoubtedly be a popular addition to the collections, marking a new chapter for the lovable rabbit.
