Sadness as Corrie, Casualty and Doctor Who actor dies

Coronation Street actor Mark Eden has died.

The actor, who played Alan Bradley for eight years, died in hospital today at the age of 92.

He is survived by his wife and co-star Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey Roberts.

He is considered one of the best villains on the series by Corrie fans.

A statement to the PA news agency said: “We are very sad to announce the death of actor Mark Eden.

“Today, January 1st, 2021, he died peacefully in hospital.

“Mark had lived with Alzheimer’s for some time and was hospitalized in November.

“Mark, 92, had a long career spanning over 50 years, including eight years on Coronation Street as Alan Bradley.

“He is survived by his wife Sue, daughter Polly, stepson Saul, and granddaughter Emma. We ask that your privacy be respected during this very difficult time. “

His run on Coronation Street ended after his character was killed by a Blackpool streetcar.

Eden later revealed a plaque on the tram stop where the scene was filmed.

He first appeared on the show as Alan Bradley in 1986 as a love interest for Rita Fairclough.

The fan website says that over the next three years he “became one of the most famous villains in the history of the program”.

His first screen credit was in 1958 with a role in Quatermass And The Pit.

He later starred in the 1965 film Doctor Zhivago with Julie Christie and Omar Sharif, and in iconic TV hits like Doctor Who and The Avengers.

He has also performed in London’s Belongs To Me and Crown Court.

Later in his career, he appeared in Doctors and Casualty.

His last screen credit in 2013 for the television film An Adventure in Space and Time.

Fans paid tribute today.

A TV fan said on Twitter, “Alan Bradley was a brilliantly written and portrayed character, and the plot by Alan, Rita was excellently executed.

One Corrie fan said, “We loved seeing him in the role – Alan Bradley was definitely the OG of the modern day #Corrie villains.”

Another said, “Oh no, RIP Mark Eden. He played Alan Bradley perfectly.

“He was so bad at terrorizing Rita.

“My thoughts are with his wife, Sue Nicholls, family and friends, and also with Sally Ann Matthews.”
