Rescued by Bell star Tiffani Thiessen, who played popular woman Kelly Kapowski on the hit show, expect season 2 of the reboot to honor the late Dustin Diamond. Created by Sam Bobrick, Saved by the Bell was one of the most influential young adult sitcoms of the 1990s, bringing Diamond to fame in teenage circles for his position as dorky sidekick Screech Powers. Diamond played Screech for over a decade of his life, appearing in Saved by the Bell from the early days of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, through Saved by the Bell: The College Years.
Last year, Peacock debuted the Saved by the Bell resurrection collection, which became a huge success and was restored for a second season. Season 1 of Saved by the Bell featured a new influx of students, including Zack’s (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Kelly’s (Thiessen) son, returning to the halls of Bayside High. With numerous references to the first show, the reboot also pulled members from the original cast, sans Screech. The series clarified Screech’s remarkable absence by showing that he lived with a robot on the International Space Station. Sadly, Diamond passed away earlier this year at the age of 44 after a battle with lung cancer.
In a conversation with People, Thiessen shows that she expects 2 from Saved by the Bell to pay tribute to Diamond. Thiessen stated that her former co-star’s departure came as a shock to the first cast, expecting Diamond to receive a wink in the coming episodes, saying, “I’d be surprised if they didn’t pay tribute. “Authors are currently in the area and are writing the episodes. We probably won’t return until this summer. We don’t have a date yet. However, the writers are writing as we speak.”
Before his shocking cancer diagnosis, Diamond was reportedly setting up a way to reprise his character as Screech in the form of Kevin – Screech’s A.I. production of the first series – for a series of insurance advertisements. It is currently unknown if robot Kevin will be featured in season 2, but the authors have a lot of material to get out of it, especially as the original cast is expected to go back for season two and could pay quite a tribute to Diamant.
Regardless of the emotion of alleged controversy between Diamond and the original cast members of Saved by the Bell, Thiessen, Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley and Lark Voorhies offered moving tributes, fond memories and good wishes to the former co-star’s relatives after the news of his death. While it remains to be seen how the creative forces behind Saved by the Bell will bring Screech into Season 2, Thiessen has expressed support for the fact that the series should honor Diamond and the character he played for most of his career.
