The full letter reads: “I was very surprised to learn at the end of last semester that there was an unexpected deficit in our school catering budget.

“Closer investigation found that this was because a handful of students had incurred a total of more than £ 1,800 in debt.

“All debts over £ 10 will be transferred to the authority and the parents will be billed by the council.

“Any debt over £ 0.01 will receive a message from the school to settle the debt and credit the system by Friday November 19th.”

A statement reads: “We ask any parent or guardian who has difficulty paying for their child’s school meals to contact the Ministry of Education or the school directly. Your child may be entitled to free school meals.

“An online system for paying for school meals has been introduced, whereby parents should ensure that they have sufficient funds to pay for their children’s school meals.

“The payment system offers flexibility to parents who for whatever reason cannot pay for a short period of time.

“Reminder messages are sent as needed to ensure there is no significant debt.

“As a council, we do not have a blanket policy of denying meals to students and we will discuss this matter directly with the school.”
