Scientists 'totally comfortable' with dropping two-metre social rule

The two metre-rule is likely to be dropped, following a lower virus alert rate.

It is probable that Boris Johnson may drop the rule in the two next week, as more lockdown rules may be relaxed.

A government source has said that scientific advisors are ‘totally comfortable’ with dropping the two-metre social distancing rule – but only if other safety precautions are put in place first.

These precautions could include properly ventilated buildings, more use of masks or the installation of screens where people might be too close together.

According to the Daily Mail, the remarks were made by a senior source and are a big indication that scientists will not resist if the PM chooses to relax the two-metre rule.

News that the social distancing rule might change comes after chief medical officers in the UK lowered the virus alert rate from four to three – following a big reduction in new infections, deaths and hospital admissions.

England’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock described the shift as ‘a big moment for the country’.

Dropping the two-metre rule is one of a few measures that the PM is expected to change over the next two weeks.

Mr Johnson has already announced a review into pubs, hotels and restaurants after pressure from the hospitality industry.
