Six women in one week report being injected during nights out in Brighton

Sussex police detectives are investigating six separate reports of women injected at night in Brighton.

Coastal city chief superintendent Justin Burtenshaw said the reports were being taken “very seriously” in light of recent nationwide coverage and concerns about spiking, and urged all possible victims to notify the police or bar staff as soon as possible.

It comes shortly after the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) announced that there were 198 confirmed reports of drink spikes in various parts of the UK in September and October, as well as 24 other reports of some form of injections.

The detectives said two women felt uncomfortable after going out in the city on October 19, while four others reported having been injected in the city center in the following days.

Meanwhile, a woman in Eastbourne, also in Sussex, reported that she was injected in one night on October 23.

Ch Supt Burtenshaw said: “Everyone has the right to enjoy a night in safety and we understand the concerns surrounding these troubling reports not just in Sussex but across the country.

“Unannounced nighttime license checks provide additional support, and if you see our officers out and about, please speak to them – or licensed security personnel – about any concerns or suspicious behavior.

“Please rest assured that we take all reports incredibly seriously and that anyone who believes they may have been spiked should inform the police or bar staff as soon as possible so that they can be tested before potential drugs leave their systems.” Evidence can be found gathered.

“You can also report to the police online, via 101 or in an emergency by calling 999.”

Elsewhere in the UK, another investigation is underway at Preston after a woman reported being injected with an unknown substance over the weekend.

Police were also called on Saturday about a separate incident in the city of Lancashire in which two women reported their drinks had been spilled, Lancashire police said.
