Suspect shot dead and policeman stabbed during incident in Glasgow city centre

A suspect has been shot dead by police after six people were injured, including an officer, during a major incident at a hotel housing refugees in Glasgow.

Three people in total are feared dead following the incident on Friday afternoon.

Police Scotland said a male suspect was shot by an armed unit and an officer is in a critical but stable condition.

All six injured people, including the officer, are being treated in hospital.

Police said there is no danger to the public, with officers in attendance in West George Street in the city centre on Friday afternoon.

In a statement on Twitter, assistant chief constable Steve Johnson said: “The individual who was shot by armed police has died.

“Six other people are in hospital for treatment to their injuries including a police officer, who is in a critical but stable condition.

“We are continuing to deal with the incident on West George Street £Glasgow and would ask people to avoid the area.

“We would urge the public not to speculate about this incident or share unconfirmed information on social media.”

“I would like to reassure the public that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. I can also confirm that a police officer was injured while dealing with the incident and that officer is receiving treatment in hospital.”

The Scottish Police Federation said the family of an officer who had been stabbed has been informed.

On Twitter, they wrote: “We appreciate families of police officers in Glasgow will be anxious to hear that a police officer has been stabbed.

“Please be aware the family of the officer has been notified and is being supported by the service.”

The Daily Record said it understood that three civilians had been killed and two police officers injured.

Around 20 police vehicles and ambulances could be seen in the city centre as a number of roads surrounding the incident were closed off.

Officers with riot shields were on the scene.

Nicola Sturgeon has described the reports as ‘truly dreadful’.

The First Minister is being updated on what happened in Glasgow earlier today.

She tweeted: “The reports from Glasgow City Centre are truly dreadful. My thoughts are with everyone involved.

“I am being updated as the situation becomes clearer.

“Please help the emergency services do their jobs by staying away from the area – and please don’t share unconfirmed information.”

The Prime Minister has said he is “deeply saddened” by the incident.

On Twitter, he wrote: “Deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow, my thoughts are with all the victims and their families.

“Thank you to our brave emergency services who are responding.”
