Texas expands quarantine requirement for out-of-state travelers

Texas expanded its quarantine requirement for travelers outside the state on Sunday, adding a growing patchwork of domestic travel rules to curb the spread of the corona virus.

Governor Greg Abbott targeted some of the pandemic hotspots and ordered air travelers from California, Washington, and several other locations to quarantine themselves for two weeks after arriving in Texas. His executive order, which previously focused on New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and New Orleans, was also Sunday expanded to all of Louisiana and Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and Miami. The new rules come into effect on Monday.

Abbott targeted state troops to enforce the quarantine order for Louisiana motorists driving to Texas with government agencies to gather information from drivers where they would isolate themselves for 14 days, with the possibility of unannounced visits to verify compliance and to pay a fine of $ 1,000 and six months in prison.

Texas has developed into a new center of the coronavirus with the Department of State Health Services reporting more than 2,500 cases and 34 deaths from Saturday evening.

The Republican governor’s action follows a similar move by Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo, a democrat who initially requested quarantine for New York drivers, but extended her order to all states on Sunday. Your initial focus on New Yorkers caused the anger of Governor Andrew Cuomo, who denounced politics and threatened to sue.

Florida has also followed neighboring Louisiana and the distant three-state region of New York, with Governor Ron DeSantis setting up checkpoints along the Panhandle border. The Republican governor, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, said he would support Trump if he quarantined New York’s metropolitan area when he was floating on Saturday.

After the idea circulated on Saturday the previous day, he resigned a few hours later and instead called on the disease control and prevention centers to issue “a strong travel guide” for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. “Quarantine will not be necessary,” he said.
