The 10 English places where Covid rates have risen most in a week

An area of Cheshire is the place in England where infection rates have risen the most in the past week.

Halton, which includes the towns of Runcorn and Widnes and borders Merseyside, tops the list of areas where most infections have occurred.

The Isle of Wight in Hampshire saw the second largest increase, according to the Press Association.

As a sign of how quickly Covid can spread, it had the lowest infection rate in England a month ago.

Rushmoor, also in Hampshire, is number ten on the list.

Three spots in Merseyside are in the top ten – Knowsley, Liverpool and Sefton.

Tendring in Essex, Corby in Northamptonshire, Crawley in West Sussex and Carlisle in Cumbria are the others on the list.

Numbers for the seven days leading up to January 4 are based on tests conducted in laboratories (Pillar 1 of the government’s testing program) and in the wider community (Pillar 2).

The rate is given as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the last four days (January 5-8) have been excluded because they are incomplete.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 314 have seen case rates rise and only one (Richmond upon Thames) has seen a decrease.

Barking & Dagenham in London continues to have the highest rate in England. In the seven days ending January 4, 3,592 new cases were recorded – the equivalent of 1,687.1 cases per 100,000 people.

That is an increase from 1,150.3 in the seven days ending December 28th.

Redbridge, also in London, has the second highest rate of 4,759 new cases from 1,166.4 to 1,559.2.

Thurrock in Essex has the third highest rate of 2,685 new cases from 1,252.1 to 1,540.1.

The 10 areas with the greatest increase in rates from week to week are:

1 Halton, Cheshire (from 279.7 to 1,172.2)

2 Isle of Wight, Hampshire (255.3 to 1,132.1)
