The Capitol under guard

After the failed Jan. 6 Uprising of the U.S. Capitol, the National Capital Region was inundated by an unprecedented security response just days before President Joe Biden’s inauguration, involving nearly 25,000 National Guard members.

In contrast to military operations overseas, this mission took place everywhere under the watchful eye of photographers. Photojournalists captured the enormity of the troop movements, social media posts expressed both support and alarm, and even some military officials themselves sent pictures to media representatives to document difficult working and living conditions.

While it was not uncommon to see armed security guards on the streets of Washington DC, the spectacle of thousands of soldiers, at times fully armed with weapons of war, was a sight to die for.
