The Rookie Season 2 Review: “Clean Cut” Eventually Discovers The Humorous

Alexi Hawley produced the American police procedural television series The Rookie for ABC. The series follows John Nolan, a man in his 40s who joins the Los Angeles Police Department as the oldest rookie in the department. Produced by ABC Studios and Entertainment One, the show is based on real-life LAPD officer William Norcross, who moved to the city in 2015 and joined the police force in his mid-40s.

Review:

Nolan has just finalized his divorce, which has been a few years in the making. He’s at the bank, where he puts his wedding ring and handles some other paperwork. He is not satisfied with the situation or with himself. However, when he thwarted a bank robbery by distracting the robbers with his musings on life, the bank manager was amazed at his courage.

A few months later passed into sunny Los Angeles. Nolan, who studied law in college but ended up working in construction, packed up his belongings, moved to Los Angeles and joined the Los Angeles Police Department. He signs up for his first day on patrol with go-getter rookie Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and legacy recruit Jackson West after completing academy (Titus Makin).

Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson), Nolan’s training officer, believes she’s on the right track to the chief; Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), Chen’s speeding T.O., tries to get inside Chen’s head, but he has a humiliating secret; and Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), who only wants to beat Bishop to become the best, wonders if the know-it-all West will get in her way. Sgt.

Wade Gray (Richard T. Jones), Nolan’s watch commander, doesn’t want Nolan there because he believes he is “ a walking midlife crisis, ” and is determined to fire him, believing his willingness to “ find himself. ” means he doesn’t take the job seriously and could kill anyone on the sergeant’s team.

The Rookie Season 2

We thought the whole pilot for The Rookie would be lines about how Nathan Fillion’s character ages when we saw the teaser over the summer. However, the show quickly establishes that it’s all about Nolan becoming a 40-year-old novice (and, bless Fillion’s rugged looks, to say Nolan is 40 is an understatement)

There are some flaws in the movie. We don’t know enough about Chang or West to worry about them right now. Bradford is so obnoxious and dismissive, especially after a car full of migrant workers honks his car, that it looks like he’s wearing a MAGA hat.

There is a romance going on between two of the rookies that makes no sense and is about to fall. But even though it is not high art, it is a performance that is fun to watch.

Verdict:

The Rookie is just fun enough to entertain without draining the mind too much. And those kinds of shows are sometimes just what you need in your life.
