A truck driver was honored for his 1980s hairstyle after winning best mullet at a European festival.

Mullet supporters came to the French village of Cheniers on Saturday and competed for the grand prize.

About 500 people came to watch Belgian Nicolas Vanderkelen take the crown when he was named best mullet at the 2021 Mullet Cup.

And he had to assert himself against stiff competition after 100 people fought for the main prize. He won the gong after an “election by applause”.

He accepted the award from the reigning champion and Frenchman Gauthier Istin, who allegedly Run 600km to attend the event but not as a participant.

The winner, Mr Vanderkelen, who said he has had the distinctive hairstyle for two decades, said his mullet was “a way of life”.

According to AFP, Julian, a festival-goer, said, “We don’t care about other people’s looks, about fashion.

“There is no typical look. Whether it’s skin color, gender, clothing, haircut, we want everyone to be perceived equally.

“And that is, so to speak, the climax, we all agree on that. It is a mule paradise.”

Last year, Brit Rob Ayton won the world’s best mullet at the annual Mullet Festival in Kurri Kurri, New South Wales.

He had his first mullet cut “for fun” only three years earlier while on vacation in Australia, and he said the style suited him.

“It is a way of life to be able to laugh at yourself,” said another of the 500 festival goers.

The mullet is a hairstyle in which the hair is cut short in the front and sides but is longer in the back.

While it was worn by some celebrities in the 1960s, it became more widespread two decades later.

The fashion magazine i-D called 2020 the “year of the mullet” because there was obviously a popularity boom due to Covid bans and the closure of hairdressers.

The mullet also made headlines in May when actor Seth Rogen performed his version of the infamous “Do for a new role.”

The transformation comes when Rogen stars alongside Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the new Hulu series Pam & Tommy, which tells the story of Pamela Anderson’s marriage to musician Tommy Lee after her sex tape was leaked.
