Trump directly provoked violence at Capitol, says Priti Patel

Home Secretary Priti Patel said Donald Trump directly provoked the violence in the U.S. Capitol with incendiary remarks.

She told BBC Breakfast: “His comments led directly to the violence and so far he has not condemned that violence and that is completely wrong.

“He basically made a series of comments yesterday that helped fuel this violence and he did nothing to de-escalate it.”

Ms. Patel has called on US President Donald Trump to condemn the violence by his supporters who stormed the capital in scenes that undermine American democracy.

She told Sky News: “The violence should stop and he should absolutely condemn everything that has happened.

“There’s no question about that. Someone was shot, people died, that’s horrible. Frankly, it’s indescribably horrible and there is no justification for it.”

Pressured to criticize the president’s involvement in flare-ups, she said: “He made a statement yesterday that barely de-escalated the situation.

“Words of provocation are completely wrong and frankly every aspect of the violence and activities that have taken place should be condemned.”
