Trump on prospect of facing DeSantis in 2024: 'I'd beat him'

Neither the former president nor DeSantis have officially entered the race, although it has been widely reported that Trump is trying to return to the White House and the Florida governor announced last week he would be eligible for re-election.

In the interview, Trump expressed confidence that if he should run for election, he could easily get the nomination, and cited his support in the Republican base, but said he was not ready to commit to it yet.

“If I run, I think I’ll do very well,” he said, adding that he based his predictions on both polls and voter “enthusiasm” for his predictions.

DeSantis gained national attention last year largely due to its laissez-faire pandemic response. A match with the former president could be a test of Trump’s stamina in party politics, as he and DeSantis are closely coordinated on important issues.

Recent polls that ignored Trump showed that DeSantis leads the group of potential contenders for 2024. Polls in July that included Trump as an option showed he easily received half of the GOP votes. However, the reliability of surveys is limited so far outside of an election year.
