A two-day-old girl was stabbed over 100 times with a screwdriver and her body was dumped next to a temple in India.
The police called for reports of a baby wrapped in blankets near the temple in Bhopal and made the gruesome discovery.
Her injuries were so severe that officials initially thought the newborn had been attacked by a wild animal after it was left in the temple before an autopsy revealed that her wounds had been made by a screwdriver.
Officers say they believe the dead was born in a house before it was stabbed.
The child has yet to be identified and the police have opened a homicide investigation. the Times of India reportsand officers search CCTV footage to find the killer.
Two more girls have been murdered in town in the past few weeks, the Times adds.
India has one of the highest rates of child homicide among women in the world, and parts of the country have persistent prejudice against girls as daughters are often viewed as a burden on poverty-stricken families.
Earlier this month, a father of five girls cut open his pregnant wife’s belly in the hope of confirming that she had a boy.
In June 2019, a video of a newborn girl left in a trash can went viral after being shared on Twitter.
