Two million workers set to change jobs before Christmas

New research shows that over 2 million UK workers plan to switch jobs before Christmas.

In fact, 6% of UK workers have already given their notice, while another 26% are actively looking for jobs as the labor market picks up and workers plan their next career move.

Totaljobs has analyzed more than 4.2 million job changes as of 2015 and surveyed nearly 4,500 job seekers from the Totaljobs database as well as 2,000 UK employees via Opinium to get the most comprehensive overview of career change trends in the UK.

The study shows not only an increase in the number of people taking up new jobs in the coming months, but also an expected increase in industry hopping. 75% of job seekers from the Totaljobs database state that they are after Covid-19.

Of those who changed industry in the past year, fewer than one in five (18%) plan to switch to their previous industry.

Cross-industry career changes are expected to increase

Looking ahead, a quarter of workers (25%) plan to change jobs in the next two years, with an estimated 3.5 million planning to change industries.

Looking at certain industries, 49% of construction workers are actively looking for a job or have a notice period, plus 41% in administration and 38% in IT.

When looking at the reasons for a future career change, the majority (57%) of job seekers cited work-life balance as the main reason, ahead of a higher salary (52%) and learning new skills (38%).

The impact of the pandemic on work priorities can also be seen in the fact that over three quarters of people (76%) say that work-life balance is now more important to them.

Career changes in the Covid era

Candidate research showed that a third of people who took up work in another industry during the cited Covid era were forced to switch industries out of necessity – affecting the impact of the pandemic on business operations, consumer demand and job opportunities across the UK.

For others, the main motivator was the desire to do something different, followed by a better work-life balance, a lack of enjoyment in their role and a higher salary, learning new skills or a lack of available roles in their previous industry.

Engagement and loyalty vary significantly depending on the industry

The analysis of historical career changes since 2015 shows that 52% of all job changes are associated with a change to another industry, while 48% remain in the same industry.

Some sectors report higher retention rates than others, with career change analysis of total jobs showing that HR employees are more likely to stay in the industry if they secure a new job (64%), followed by design (62%) and IT (62%). .

Looking at the total number of job changes within each industry, the following sectors had the highest rates of departures: military (47%), advertising (42%), public sector, agriculture and charities (all 41%).

A person’s loyalty to their employer also varies widely across industries, with public service workers and police staying with the same employer an average of 8.9 years, followed by arts and entertainment workers (8.8 years average) .

At the other end of the scale, employers in marketing and PR see employees as the shortest at 5.5 and 5.6 years of age, respectively.
