In the US, an average of more than 40,000 new cases are reported each day, compared to the high of 65,000 a day in July.
Worldwide cases have exceeded 32 million, with India and Brazil following the United States with the second highest and third highest case numbers, respectively. The US also vastly outperforms any other country in post-Covid-19 deaths.
Calling the death toll a “disgrace”, President Donald Trump said it could be worse and pointed to a worst-case forecast that 2.2 million Americans could die with no action to suppress cases .
The new milestone comes as Trump continues to downplay the pandemic while holding crowded, mostly maskless campaign rallies. It also comes as Trump officials continue to clash with top government experts and academics over response efforts.
