U.S. issues ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for Canada amid Covid rise

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US State Department advised against traveling to neighboring Canada on Monday due to a rising number of Covid-19 cases in the wake of the spread of the Omicron variant.

The CDC increased his travel recommendation to “Level Four: Very High” for Canadasaid Americans should avoid travel while the State Department also said Monday has published its Level Four: Do Not Travel Advisory for Canada citing Covid-19 cases.

The CDC, which lists around 80 travel destinations worldwide at level four, has also raised the island of Curacao to level four.

In November, the United States lifted restrictions on its land borders with Canada and Mexico on fully vaccinated foreigners, ending the historic restrictions on non-essential travelers introduced in March 2020 to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Canada remains a top overseas destination for Americans.

“We are aware of the latest CDC advice,” said a spokeswoman for Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, noting that Ottawa had pushed residents off unnecessary travel last month.

Canada first issued the recommendation in March 2020, but withdrew it last October – before the first Omicron cases were reported – citing the success of vaccination campaigns.

This month Canada broke its one-day record for the highest number of people hospitalized with Covid-19. Last Friday, officials said the number of new daily cases had increased 65 percent in the previous week and threatened health systems.

The CDC also lowered travel recommendations from Level 4 to “Level 3: High” to Armenia, Belarus, Lesotho and Zimbabwe on Monday. Singapore also rates Singapore as “Level 3” after previously listed as unknown.

The CDC says Americans should be fully vaccinated before traveling to level 3 destinations.

Covid-19 hospital admissions in the US hit a record high with more than 1.3 million registered Covid cases on Monday, according to Reuters and NBC News.

Meanwhile, the highly contagious Omicron variant has pushed hospital admissions past the record of 132,051 last January.
