U.S. rejoins coalition pushing for 1.5 degrees Celsius goal at COP26

GLASGOW – The US has joined a group of countries pushing for higher goals at the COP26 UN climate talks.

The return of the world’s second largest emitter and richest country strengthens the group known as the High Ambition Coalition, an informal alliance of small vulnerable countries and large western nations including the EU.

They are calling for the countries in Glasgow to raise their climate targets to align with the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The return of the US was first made in the Guardian and confirmed by State Department spokeswoman Whitney Smith.

The group formed in secret in the run-up to the 2015 Paris Climate Talks and made significant concessions in the final days of the Paris Agreement. Ministers held dinners on the sidelines of two events in London and Milan earlier this year, attended by US State Department officials but not formally joining the group.
