UK records highest daily Covid death toll since April

In the UK, more than 1,000 coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in the highest daily reported number since April.

The government said an additional 1,041 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday.

It’s the highest daily total reported since April 21, when 1,224 deaths were recorded.

The total number of coronavirus deaths in the UK is 77,346, although separate figures released by statistical agencies and additional data on deaths that have occurred in the past few days show there have now been 93,000 deaths from Covid-19.

The government’s numbers continue to be hit by a delay in the release of the latest data and will include some deaths that have just been reported during the Christmas and New Years period.

The government also said there had been an additional 62,322 laboratory-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK as of 9 a.m. on Wednesday. This is the highest daily total reported so far in the pandemic, and a slight increase from the 60,916 level on Tuesday.

The total number of cases in the UK is 2,836,801.

The number of cases is consistent with higher test numbers compared to the first wave of the pandemic. 498,624 tests were conducted on Tuesday.
