Defying the threat of war with a flag-waving Day of Unity, Ukrainians pledge to fight to the death for their country.

Locals stood to sing the national anthem, vowing to defend their homeland against Russia “to the last breath”.

It came hours after a US estimate of a Russian attack time of 3am passed without an anticipated invasion.

They sang their hearts out in Kyiv’s Olympics Stadium after unfurling a 200-metre national flag.

It was paraded around the stadium’s running track before a rendition of the national anthem was sung today.

Millions joined in as Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky called on then to stand firm against Vladimir Putin’s threats.

Mr Zelensky urged patriots to stand firm on the day they had been warned to expect a Russian attack.

People also gathered in Maidan Square and government buildings, shops and offices paused to give the salute.

Stadium security worker Alexander Pavlovich, 66, led the traditional chant “Fame to Ukraine” after the anthem was sung inside the 70,000 seat stadium.

The air force veteran said: “We are here to show the world we are united against Russia.

“It

is time for us to stand together and be strong in the face of this aggression and we are here today to make Putin see we are united.

“If he orders an invasion, he will learn to his cost that we are ready to fight.”

Ukrainian youth worker Mxim Lutsenko, 37, said: “We don’t want a war – we want to live in peace – but we will not take orders from Russia and fight for our freedom.”
