Steven Spielberg will finally make a melody with West Side Story, another variation of the 1957 Broadway Melodic by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. It will be out in December, but until further notice, this is the beginning and end you need to think about ahead of time. It includes the delivery date, cast and team, and then some.

What is West Side Story?
West Side Story is a transformation of the 1957 Broadway melody with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and verses by Stephen Sondheim, enlivened roughly by Romeo and Juliet. The melodic was recently adapted for filming in 1961. That transformation remains widely acclaimed, and was intended for 11 Academy Awards and won 10. Including Best Picture means it’s an intense representation of Steven Spielberg to follow.
But since he’s one of our best living leaders, you’ll probably be fine. An essential difference between this transformation and the 1961 film is that Spielberg insisted on making sure artists of Hispanic background played Spanish characters, and, according to Vanity Fair. The filmmaker “estimates that 20 of the 33 Puerto Rican characters are explicitly Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican descent.”
“They brought themselves, and everything they accept and every little thing about them – they wore that to workSpielberg said. “There was also so much collaboration between the cast that they had to have the opportunity to focus on the Puerto Rican experience. They all relate to, I think, a variety, both within the Puerto Rican, Nuyorican population, and the more extensive Latinx population. In fact, they looked at that in a serious way.”
West Side Story Synopsis
West Side Story “tells the exemplary story of wild competition and youthful love in 1957 New York City.” The youthful lovers are Tony and Maria, who succumb to each other despite having associations with fighting road packs The Jets and The Sharks.
Maria is “essential to the influx of Puerto Rican travelers who traded one island for another as they came to New York in search of a different life in the post-World War II era of prosperity. Her streetwise Casanova is Tony… who once controlled a group of neighborhood residents known as the Jets, but has since grown out of them. Tony’s old companions engage in an escalating fight for control of the neighborhood against Puerto Rican rivals calling themselves the sharks, driven by Maria’s brother Bernardo.

West Side Story Director, Crew, and that’s just the beginning
West Side Story is coordinated by a youthful up-and-comer named Steven Spielberg. That kid is on his way to good things, you’ll hardly believe it. Tony Kushner, who has worked with Spielberg on Munich and Lincoln, curated the content. Kushner is also a leading producer.
Justin Peck arranged the melodic numbers in the film, while Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel recorded the score, which was orchestrated by author and director David Newman. Jeanine Tesori directed the cast on vocals while Matt Sullivan took over as lead music maker for the film. Spielberg delivers alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Kevin McCollum.
West Side Story Cast
In West Side Story, Ansel Elgort* stars as Tony; Rachel Zegler as Mary; Ariana DeBose as Anita; David Alvarez as Bernardo; Mike Faist as the Riff; Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino; Ana Isabelle as Rosalia; Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank; Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke; and Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 film, as Valentina, who claims the corner shop Tony works in.
Importantly, in 2020, a lady blamed Elgort for sexual misconduct in 2014 when she was 17 and he was 20. Elgort denied the claim, saying the relationship was brief and consensual. Since then, there has been almost no recording of the story. But that may change as the film gets closer.
West Side Story Release Date and Where to Watch It
West Side Story was made for theaters on Dec 10, 2021. It was originally supposed to come out in December last year, but the pandemic disrupted the general flow. Conveniently enough, delaying delivery by a year will have this: West Side Story show up to correspond with the 60th anniversary of the arrival of the first 1961 film. As of now, West Side Story will be selected for theaters.
