Throughout Season 5, Marco Inaros made huge moves for the Belt’s title while flying the flag of the new Free Navy. He has overseen the bombardment of Earth and has caused three stealth tech-coated asteroids to hit the individual homeworld; he ordered the murder of Fred Johnson along with the acquisition of the final sample of Protomolecule; and he has sold the monster to a Martian escape fleet in exchange for ships and assistance in his final attack in Season 5 Episode 10, “Nemesis Games” – shooting down Medina Station and taking full control of Ring Space.
It seems Marco’s job throughout Season 5 has been all about creating a distraction as he chases after his top prize, Medina Station. While the rest of the solar system is still looking another way, recovering from Marco’s previous attacks, the completely free navy attacks the ships guarding Ring Space’s Sol Gate entrance. However, the coordinated nature of the attack shows how long he has planned the action and how widespread Marco’s influence is.
As Marco’s Free Navy congregates around the Sol Gate, the boat guarding the entrance is hit by smashed meteor debris, suggesting Earth was not Marco’s only target hurling his stealth-covered rocks. As the ship feels the effect of the debris, the completely free Mars navy and rogue fleet begin firing at the front of the ship. The ship is also hit by incoming fire coming from Ring Space, implying that Marco has representatives on Medina Station or was crying around it. The relentless attack destroys the ship, paving the way for Marco’s Free Navy and the rogue Martian fleet to enter the Ring Space unimpeded.
Due to the delay in the broadcast, the entire attack is seen three hours later by recently appointed UN Secretary General Chrisjen Avasarala and everyone else on Luna. They have to accept that it is too late to organize an answer because everything they see has already happened and Marco has taken control of Medina.
In addition, this is the first time that Earth authorities have noticed that part of Mars’s fleet has broken off and become an independent body. This escape fleet appears to contain Admiral Sauveterre, the Martian Admiral who gave a lecture on how best to operate Ring Space within an asymmetrical bottleneck in Season 5 Episode 2, ‘Churn’, but his boat mysteriously melts away in Ring Space. after the participation.
With full control of Ring Space, Marco and also the Free Navy now have jurisdiction over all transit and past settlements. Some of these new settlements are not yet self-explanatory and rely heavily on shipments from Earth or Mars, as they have been able to harvest from the alien worlds. In addition, after his attack on Earth, Marco demanded that Earth and Mars confine themselves to their respective atmospheres and treat all actions against this directive as an act of aggression. So Marco basically made the Free Navy vital to the survival of those planets beyond the Ring Gates, creating the platform for a Ring Space engagement at some point in Season 6. If that wasn’t enough , then he would have been for Sauveterre’s disappearance. spotted talking to Dr. Cortazar on the protomolecule construction of orbital platforms, so Season 6 also promises more protomolecule shenanigans.
