What is Battle Royale? Everything about this game genre

Anyone who has played video games in recent years has certainly come across the term Battle Royale, which represents one of the most popular genres today. Starting from the same common idea, different games took their own approach to the theme, with varying degrees of success.

We’ve already listed the best battle royale games for you here, but it’s also cool to understand exactly how and where this fever started before you started playing. Especially since that nomenclature didn’t even show up in video games! Understand it in our full article below!

The Origin of Battle Royale

Before the genre in video games took off, Battle Royale was best known in pop culture as a novel by Japanese writer Koushun Takami. Published in 1999, Batoru Rowairu depicts a group of students forced to fight each other to death until only one winner remains.

Despite the controversial and heavy story, or perhaps because of it, the book became a bestseller and in 2000 it was adapted for manga and film, further increasing its success. While there is no official record of it, it is possible that Takami was inspired by the fights staged by British boxers in the 18th century, who competed in tournaments with a similar elimination schedule.

With Battle Royale’s renewed success, the sport saw the early 2000s inspire other books (such as the Hunger Games phenomenon) and MMA and wrestling tournaments in arenas around the world. It seemed like a matter of time before they got into games, which actually happened in 2012.

Battle Royale in video games

While the Battle Royale formula has somehow appeared in games dozens or hundreds of times, such as in the infamous survival mini-games of the classic Mario Party franchise, the explosion didn’t come until Brendan Greene created a DayZ mod. named PlayerUnknown.

Greene already had experience working on H1Z1 and helped developer Bluehole launch PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which would become one of the most influential games of all time. His formula for dropping paratroopers on an island has been widely copied over the years.

Even Fortnite made a change of course in its development and came up with a very similar proposal to the flagship of its game, which no doubt helped it become one of the greatest phenomena in history.

In view of the goldmine that Fortnite had become, the most diverse studios tried their luck in the formula, with varying degrees of success. Games that have won millions of fans include Free Fire, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
