What is the Warm Home Discount, who qualifies for it and how do you apply for it?

With energy bills rising and the prospect of a cold winter, many UK households will be concerned about how much gas and electricity they will cost in the coming months.

But there is at least some help for those most in need. Warm Home Discount offers help with energy bills to those who need it most urgently.

So what is the Warm Home Discount, who is qualified for it and how can you apply for it?

What is the Warm Home Discount?

With the Warm Home Discount, eligible households will receive £ 140 off their electricity bills for the winter of 2021-22. Since this is a discount, the money will be deducted from your bill and not paid out to you.

Households whose utility supplies them with both gas and electricity may be able to get the discount on their gas bills instead.

It’s a one-time discount that takes money off your bill between October and March. It does not affect the winter fuel or cold weather payment you receive.

Am I entitled to the Warm Home discount?

If you receive the guarantee loan part of the universal loan, you should automatically receive the Warm Home discount every year.

You may also be eligible for the Warm Home Discount if you are on a low income and meet your utility company’s eligibility criteria.

How to apply for the Warm Home discount

If you receive the guaranteed loan element of the universal loan, the Department of Labor and Pensions should write to you to inform you that you are entitled to the warm home discount.

Otherwise, you must meet your energy company’s criteria for the discount. These vary between different energy companies, so check with your supplier about the criteria.

Even if you received the Warm Home Discount last year, you will have to reapply this year and every year. Make sure you apply as early as possible.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, your energy supplier should apply the discount to your energy bill by March 31 of next year at the latest.
