When you can see the Blood Supermoon light up the sky

It’s an incredible event that sky watchers can enjoy today – the supermoon.

People are being pampered today (May 26th) as the full moon in May 2021 coincides with two rare lunar events.

It will be one of only two supermoons in 2021, meaning the moon will be at its closest point to Earth.

This makes it appear larger and brighter than usual.

NASA has dubbed it the “superest” of the full moons of the year as it will be the largest and brightest by 2021.

It will not only be a supermoon, but also a lunar eclipse or a so-called blood moon.

This means that the full moon takes on a reddish tinge – and if the weather stays clear it should be a spectacular sight.

When does the blood supermoon appear?

The lunar eclipse will take place today (Wednesday, May 26th).

The total lunar eclipse is expected to take around 14 minutes, but the entire process will take longer.

It starts at 9.47 a.m. CET, with the peak population occurring around 12.15 p.m.

The whole spectacle is over at 1.50 a.m.

According to Patricia Skelton, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the best time to see the Blood Moon is early in the morning on May 26 or later in the evening on the same day – after sunset.

She explained, “A supermoon occurs when a full moon occurs at or near the time the moon reaches its closest point to the earth – a point called perigee.

“Perigee occurs on May 26th at 2.51am, full moon at 12.14pm on the same day.

“The supermoon will rise in the east about half an hour after sunset and be visible all night.”

How to see the blood supermoon

If the weather permits, you should be able to see the full moon with the naked eye.

However, since this happens during the day, the lunar eclipse is not visible in the UK.

Instead, it’s best seen from parts of North and South America, the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and South / East Asia.

Ms. Skelton said, “Although British stargazers cannot see the lunar eclipse, the supermoon is still worth a look.”

For the best possible chance, you should be as far away from light pollution as possible.

Ms. Skelton added, “For the best views of the supermoon, wait for the moon to rise higher in the sky.”

If you cannot see the full moon, for example because it is too cloudy, you can still watch a live stream of it on the Internet.

The Lowell Observatory is streaming a live stream on You Tube that anyone can watch.

What is a blood supermoon?

A blood supermoon occurs when a full moon is both a supermoon and a lunar eclipse.

The NASA website states: “A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun and moon take precise positions on opposite sides of the earth,” explains NASA’s website.

“During this alignment, the earth prevents some of the sunlight from reaching the full moon. Our atmosphere filters the light in passing, softens the edge of the shadow of our planet and gives the moon a deep, rosy shimmer. “

Meanwhile, a supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, a point called perigee. This makes it appear around 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.

Ms. Skelton said, “Perigee occurs on May 26th at 2.51am, with a full moon at 12.14pm that same day.

“The supermoon will rise in the east about half an hour after sunset and be visible all night.”
