Woman detained after child’s death in Oldham

A woman was arrested in Oldham after the death of a child.

Greater Manchester police said in a statement that their officers were called by ambulance services around 6:20 p.m. on Friday about an incident on property on Elm Road in the Limeside area.

Police said “a child was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene” and the circumstances of the death are currently being investigated.

Further details about the child were not known.

A woman in her thirties has been detained under the mental health law, the troops added.

Detective Superintendent Chris Packer said, “Our thoughts go with the child’s loved ones at this heartbreaking time. Specialist speakers offer them support.

“Our investigation is still in the early stages and we ask anyone with information to contact us or Crimestoppers immediately. Due to a previous police contact, this incident has been forwarded to our Professional Standards Department and the Independent Police Conduct Bureau.

“This sad news will certainly distress the community, but I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to clear up the situation.”
