One woman hid for 21 years after suffering from “elephant legs” due to a rare disease

Communication manager Yasmina Kemppainen began to feel pain in her legs at the age of 12.

Soon after, the 36-year-old’s legs began to swell and she suspected something was wrong.

She recalls that as a teenager, a teenager told her she was “too thin” but she was unable to look over her “fat legs”.

In February 2018, Yasmina from Espoo, Finland finally took the courage to see a doctor who diagnosed her with lipedema, a condition that causes abnormal fat accumulation.

At the age of 12, she hid her legs until she was diagnosed in 2018, which was a total of 21 years.

She hated going to social events or the beach and at work, she tired quickly and the condition slowly took over her life.

Other adults referred to her legs as “elephant legs” or told her to “lose weight” because they were “too big”.

For those who have lipedema, it is not that easy to lose weight.

While losing weight can relieve symptoms, it doesn’t clear the condition and the legs can still appear larger than the torso.

In February and April 2019, Yasmina decided to undergo liposuction in Berlin that removed fat for £ 10,320.

She also switched to a keto diet, which consisted of high-fat, low-carb content.

Before surgery, she weighed 10. 7 pounds was an XL size on her lower half.

Now she weighs 8st 6lb and can wear a size XS.

Since the operation, her self-confidence has grown by leaps and bounds and she has taken control of her life again.

She started posting her story online to help and inspire other women who might find themselves in a similar situation.

“I was twelve years old when I started to notice pain in my legs,” said Yasmina

“Sometimes they swelled up and I knew they looked different.

“It was depressing to notice. People said I was ‘too thin’ but I only saw my fat legs.

“Even as I grew up, people still commented on it, saying that my legs looked like an elephant’s.

“Others told me to lose weight because I was too tall.

“I didn’t like going to social events because I didn’t want to show my legs. I didn’t go to the beach.

I couldn’t go dancing without getting tired easily. I couldn’t even get by at work anymore.

“In February 2018, I was finally diagnosed with lipedema and my doctor explained the various options.

She flew to the Med Plast Clinic in Berlin, Germany and underwent two liposuction procedures that changed her life.

Now she feels full of energy and confidence.
“I feel strong now,” she said

“I feel confident. Lipedema no longer controls my life.

“I would like to draw the attention of all other women who suffer to the subject of lipedema. I hope my story gives you hope.

“Surgery has changed my life, but the introduction of a keto diet has also helped me a lot.

“I was surrounded by supportive friends and my husband the entire time. My husband always tells me how strong I am.

“I would never have met him without the operation. We met at a party and I would never have gone to a party before.

“Don’t give up. Life can surprise you in a very positive way.”
