Armed California jewelry store owner Usman Bhatti fends off smash-and-grab suspects

A California jewelry store owner fended off five suspects from a robbery after firing his legal firearm, police said.

The man, identified by KTVU as Usman Bhatti, foiled the attempted robbery at his store in the Tanforan Mall in San Bruno on Jan. 21 at approximately 1 p.m.

Bhatti, who has a concealed carry permit, drew his gun after one of the men smashed into a display case and then threatened him with a crowbar, police said.

After pointing the firearm at the would-be robber and yelling at him to stop, the crowbar-wielding suspect fled to the food court, authorities said.

Another male suspect then pulled out his own gun and aimed it at Bhatti, police said.

The owner then aimed his firearm at the gun-wielding suspect, who then ran away with his remaining cohorts.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported in the attempted robbery.

Bhatti told KTVU that he had no choice but to draw his gun.

“I’m not trying to be a hero or macho… it just happened really fast and I had no choice,” he told the outlet.
