Jimmy Carr comes under fire for 'truly disturbing' Holocaust joke about Travellers

Jimmy Carr has come under fire for a joke about the Holocaust and Travelers in his latest Netflix special.

Jimmy, known for stand-up and roles on shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats, joked about the horror of the Holocaust and “six million Jewish lives lost,” before adding a snide remark about the deaths of thousands of gypsies at the hands of the Nazis.

Two groups have released statements condemning the joke about the traveling community.

In a tweet referencing the joke, The Traveler Movement – a charity supporting the UK traveler community – said: “This is really disturbing and goes well beyond humour.

“We need all your support to declare this £StopTravellerHate @StopFundingHate.”

Hope Not Hate, the anti-fascism and anti-racism campaigning group, also condemned the comedian’s joke on Friday.

In a tweet, they said, “Comedy is an amazing tool for progressive change and it’s such a shame that @jimmycarr has chosen to use his platform to celebrate the murder of one of society’s most marginalized groups.”

In a tweet to her 1.2 million followers, the Auschwitz Memorial asked Carr to “learn about the fate of around 23,000 Roma and Sinti who were deported to Auschwitz”.

They added, “It’s sad to hear words that can fuel prejudice, hurt people and pollute the memory of their tragedy.”

Jimmy warned audiences that his Netflix special His Dark Material, released on Christmas Day, would contain “terrible things.”

A Carr representative has been reached for comment.
