Man claiming to world’s oldest celebrates his ‘121st birthday’

A man who claims to be the oldest in the world has reportedly celebrated his 121st birthday while suffering from Covid.

Andrelino Vieira da Silva celebrated turning 121 with his family in Aparecida de Goiania, Brazil, on February 3.

His age is not officially verified but if true, this would make him the world’s oldest living person.

The retired celebrated with a cake decorated with his first name, his alleged age, and the phrase ‘O terror do INSS’, meaning ‘The terror of the INSS’.

INSS is the acronym for the National Institute of Social Security, which, among other things, deals with pension payments and death benefits.

The theme of the cake was conceived by his granddaughter, accounting supervisor Janaina Lemes de Souza, 36.

According to the elderly man’s ID card, he was born in 1901.

Andrelino was married and had seven children, five of whom are still alive.

He also reportedly has 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

Janaina was quoted in the news portal G1 as saying: “It is a great privilege to have a person of this age in the family to be able to share stories with us.

“My daughter has had the opportunity to have a great grandfather. I did not.

‘We value every moment. He travels, he goes to bars, he does everything.”

Janaina said the family has three houses on the same plot of land. She lives in one with her husband and daughter; her mum, dad and brother live in another; and her grandfather lives alone in the third.

She said: “He is lucid, active, cooks his food, takes care of his little things. We live with the whole family on the same land, but he has his own shack, where he lives alone.

He leads a normal life. He loves forro – a style of music and dance from north-eastern Brazil – and would always dance.”

Andrelino celebrated his birthday with just the family members who live on the plot of land. No others were invited, as, according to Janaina, they all have Covid-19.

She said: “As we all have Covid-19, we just made a little cake so as to not let it go uncelebrated. It was just us.

But he is doing very well, he only has mild symptoms. He has had all three doses of the vaccine.”

The oldest certified living person is Japan’s Kane Tanaka, who was born on 2nd January 1903.

It is not clear if Andrelino and his family seek to have his age officially verified.
