The Chancellor has spoken to Martin Lewis following the announcement from the government today (Thursday) on a range of financial measures to battle spiraling energy costs.
Rishi Sunak was interviewed by the financial guru on The Martin Lewis Money Show Live on ITV.
And when he was in the chair, he was hit with a tyical Lewis zinger.
Earlier today, Mr Sunak announced that households will receive £350 towards their energy bills, as costs continue to rise.
Tonight, Mr Lewis told him the question he had been asked to put to the Chancellor most often was: “Why the hell aren’t you giving us more?”
Mr Sunak responded: “I totally appreciate that people are anxious about this and there is a lot happening at once.
“That’s why we have taken the actions that we have today, which I think will make a significant difference.
“£350 is a significant sum of money that will help people.”
The Chancellor’s new £350 support package comes in two different forms.
Speaking at a press conference, earlier Mr Sunak said: “Without Government action today’s increase in the price cap would leave households needing to find on average an extra £693 this year. That is clearly a very significant sum so for the vast majority of families , the Government is taking direct action to share the burden.
“Today we are announcing an energy bill rebate worth £350.
“You will receive that cash support through two different rates.”
The first method will see electricity customers receive a £200 discount on their energy bills.
For the second, Mr Sunak said: “We will pay a council tax rebate of £150 to all households in brands A to D which covers around four out of five households in England.
“The reason for doing this through the council tax system is it is the quickest way to get money to the families that most need it.
