School nurse sheds 10 stone so she could see her son grow up

A mother of one shared her advice on how to drop 10 stones

Heidi Ferrier-Hixon, a school nurse team leader, stepped into action on her weight loss journey when she gasped as she walked just a few steps from her home to her car in the driveway.

At the time, she was wearing a size 30 in clothes and was determined to lose the weight because she wanted to see her son grow up.

Speak with Birmingham LiveHeidi, a school nurse team leader for the Sandwell School Nursing Service, said, “Simple things like walking from my front door to the car on the drive would make me gasp.

“After climbing the stairs, I honestly thought I was going to die.

“I was only 5 feet 3 inches tall, morbidly obese and asthmatic. I didn’t want a long and healthy life. I was depressed.”

The 45-year-old from Broseley, Shropshire was also concerned about visiting places to sit and take special precautions to ensure she wasn’t in tight pressure.

“I would always go early to pick out the chairs to see if I could fit in them or if they are strong enough,” she said.

“I’ve had weight problems all my life, and I think I’ve denied my body. I used to think that it wasn’t my fault that I was so overweight.

“In the end, something just clicked and I realized I wasn’t going to live long enough to see my son grow up. I knew I had to do something about it and the only way to do it was to go over to seek support from my family doctor. “

Heidi was referred to a specialist service – but first had to undergo therapy sessions to get more support with her weight loss.

“At first I was reluctant because of my attitude,” Heidi recalled. “But it was precisely these sessions that helped me change my mindset and lose weight.

“I was able to take a closer look at my relationship with food and find out why I was indulging myself excessively.

“My portion sizes were out of range, and because I was raised to finish everything on my plate, that’s exactly what I would do. I would also secretly eat fast food between my main meals. And I wouldn’t think about going to the fridge and grabbing a snack when I get home from work. I did that at a young age.

“My dietitian and therapy helped me see all of this so clearly, and my journey to a healthier myself has begun.”

Heidi reduced her portion sizes and distributed her main meals on a side plate. She also became a vegan, cutting processed meat out of her diet right away.

“By acknowledging all of this, I was able to break the cycle. I started only three meals a day with healthy snacks in between. I checked the food labeling before I brought anything so I knew exactly what I was putting in my body, ”said the nurse, who is now a size 14.

Her commitment has paid off and now Heidi is much healthier and does not gasp after walking just a few meters.

“I feel great and physically fit. I go running that I would never have dreamed of before. “

She added, “I would like to encourage anyone reading this and relating my experience to see their GP.

“Ask for help and assistance because it’s out there. I did and it changed my life for the better.”
