Top UK scientist to face US Congress in questions over origin of Covid virus

Top British scientist Sir Jeremy Farrar is to be questioned by the US Congress on questions about the origins of the coronavirus that causes Covid 19.

Sir Jeremy, a tropical disease expert, is head of the Wellcome Trust, which allocates millions of pounds a year to medical research, and is a former member of the government’s scientific advisory group SAGE.

He was initially among a group of scientists who said the Covid virus could have originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, reports the post.

He later signed an article in the medical journal The Lancet saying the idea that Covid was man-made was “implausible” and a conspiracy theory.

The US Committee on Oversight and Reform has asked Sir Jeremy to appear before them and answer questions about the files.

An order sent to Sir Jeremy said: “Documents in the custody of the National Institutes of Health show how a group of scientists, including you, initially believed Covid-19 was man-made before reversing course and after discussions with Senior government health officials claimed otherwise.”

Sir Jeremy told the Mail: “The scientific evidence continues to point to SARS-CoV-2 [the Covid-19 virus] Animal-to-human transition as the most likely scenario.”
