She jogged on the Grand Canal Tullamore

Councilor Declan Harvey said, “Ashling recently visited the Durrow Schoolchildren and did a choir with them.

“She was a very popular teacher and a very popular person. It’s a big shock to all of us. That should never happen and is incomprehensible.

“There is a lot of sadness because most of my neighbors up here walk the canal line every day.

“It’s always very popular with people who go for a walk, bike or jog, it’s usually heaven down there.

She was attacked around 4 p.m.

“You could go for a 3 mile walk and it was very safe and everything and that this happens comes as a shock to all of us.

“I don’t know how people will feel about it now, especially the ladies. I would like to express my condolences to your family. “

A Garda spokesman said: “A man in his 40s was arrested in connection with this incident and is currently on Tullamore Garda Station under the terms of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Justice Secretary Helen McEntee added: “My thoughts tonight are with the family of the young woman killed in a truly shocking crime, her friends and her community.

“Please everyone with information, come to An Garda Siochana.”

Fine Gael Minister Josepha Madigan wrote on Twitter: “A young woman cannot even walk down a canal at four o’clock at noon only to be attacked and murdered.

“Sincere condolences from your family.

“We urgently need to address why we live in a country where something like this can happen!”
